4/C midshipmen practice being in formation for uniform inspections during NSO.

The University of North Carolina’s New Student Orientation is a three day period in which incoming 4/C are provided with entry level knowledge about the Navy and Marine Corps, as well as an introduction to life as a midshipman. After a brief welcome from the Commanding Officer, midshipmen will be issued their Physical Training and Khaki uniforms and taught how to properly wear them. Throughout the course of the three day orientation period, midshipmen will be introduced and become familiar with the information in their Personal Qualification Standards (PQS) notebook. This notebook serves as the foundation for basic military knowledge every midshipman is required to know. On top of the knowledge that the new 4/C are required to learn, students will participate in an initial fitness test and swim qualification. Orientation is not only an opportunity to become acclimated to the balance of a lifestyle between a college student and midshipman, but it is also an excellent opportunity for incoming midshipmen to build lasting relationships with their peers.
